Businesses Urged To Keep Doors Closed

Last summer’s heat wave put a heavy burden on the province’s power grid and even after the massive blackout in 2003 it appears that many businesses haven’t taken heed and are still blasting their air conditioning while leaving their doors wide open.

The Conservation Council of Ontario (CCOA) has launched its Doors Closed campaign in an effort to get stores, big and small, to adopt green policies.

“When you are running air conditioning, you need to close the door, close the windows and keep the cool air in. Cool the store and nothing more,” explains Chris Winter of the CCOA.

Volunteers were spreading that message in Yorkville on Thursday.

“We do (keep the doors open) to attract clientele,” admits salesperson Jannette Salvador. “But I think this sounds like a great idea. It is very important, especially in such a busy city.”
