Former ‘N Sync Singer Lance Bass Admits He’s Gay

He made headlines first with his hit band and then with his failed attempt to journey into space, now Lance Bass has some other news to share: he’s gay.

Bass, one of the five members of ‘N Sync, told People magazine recently that he didn’t reveal his sexual orientation sooner because he was worried about how it would impact the popularity of his band.

“I knew that I was in this popular band and I had four other guys’ careers in my hand, and I knew that if I ever acted on it or even said (that I was gay), it would overpower everything,” he contends.

Bass says he’s happy, and in a “very stable” relationship with reality show star Reichen Lehmkuhl, 32, a past winner of The Amazing Race.

The singer formed the boy band with Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick, and together they recorded a string of hits including Bye Bye Bye and It’s Gonna Be Me.

After they went on hiatus in 2002, Bass trained to be an astronaut and was planning a trip into space but wasn’t able to secure enough funding for the mission.

He says now that he’s come out he feels liberated, and there’s no worry that his revelation could spell the end of ‘N Sync.

“So I had that weight on me of like, ‘Wow, if I ever let anyone know, it’s bad.’ So I just never did,” he admitted.

Bass and Fatone are developing a sitcom pilot inspired by the comedy The Odd Couple, in which Bass’s character will be gay.

“The thing is, I’m not ashamed,” Bass says. “I don’t think it’s wrong, I’m not devastated going through this. I’m more liberated and happy than I’ve been my whole life. I’m just happy.”
