Mel Gibson Arrested On Suspicion Of DUI

Exactly what Mel Gibson was doing on a Malibu highway at 2:36 Friday morning isn’t known, but according to local officials that’s exactly when the Hollywood A-lister was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.

Gibson, whose films from Lethal Weapon to The Passion of the Christ have earned him millions upon millions, was allegedly speeding eastbound on the Pacific Coast Highway when officers stopped him, said sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore.

The 50-year-old was booked at the Lost Hills sheriff’s station just after 4am according to department records and was cited and released a short time later. Bail was set at $5,000.

“The investigation is ongoing,” Whitmore said.

“As we would do with anyone, we don’t want to release any more since the information is fragmentary.”

Gibson’s spokesman, Alan Nierob, said he was looking into the matter.

An Oscar winner as best director of 1995’s Braveheart, Gibson is currently awaiting his follow-up to blockbuster The Passion – the highly anticipated Apocalypto.

Just as his 2004 religious epic was shot in Aramaic and Latin, Apocalypto was done in an ancient tongue, Yucatec Maya.

The film, slated for release in December 2006, was both written and directed by Gibson and tells the story of the decline of the Mayan empire.
