Boy George Mobbed By Media As He Attempts To Sweep Up New York Streets

Singer Boy George tried to begin cleaning up the streets of New York as part of his court-ordered community service Monday but found there was something standing between him and the trash:   photographers.

The artist faced the throng of news photographers as he attempted to begin sweeping up the sidewalks in Lower Manhattan, clad in an orange safety vest, gloves and dark sunglasses.

“It’s supposed to me making me humble. Why don’t you just let me do it,” George told the horde of shooters.

The singer had been sentenced to five days of community service in March for falsely reporting a robbery. When police responded to his call, they found 13 bags of cocaine in his apartment.

The plea deal allowed him to avoid the more serious charge of drug possession. However, his lawyer Louis Freeman warned then that the punishment would turn into a “media circus” and asked that his client be made to work with an AIDS charity instead.

But Criminal Court Judge Anthony Ferrara stuck by the original sentence – threatening to send George to jail if he failed to complete the time by August 28.

The former frontman for 80s pop band Culture Club had a sense of humour about the media attention, sweeping leaves at them at one point.

“My mum was a cleaner, my dad was a builder, you know what I mean,” George said.

The unwanted attention forced city Sanitation Department officials to move him from the street to a fenced-off parking lot for more sweeping.
