Toronto International Film Festival Announces Full Line-Up, Stars Expected To Attend

Brad Pitt’s coming to town – along with Russell Crowe, Jude Law, and recent Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon.

They’re just a few of the names expected to grace Hogtown streets next month as the Toronto International Film Festival hits screens around town.

Pitt will be here to promote his film Babel, which premiered earlier this year at the Cannes festival. He wasn’t able to attend that event however because of the birth of his daughter Shiloh. It’s unclear whether Shiloh’s mom, Angelina Jolie, will be joining him in Toronto.

But there’ll be plenty of other stars to gaze at – including Crowe, Law, Witherspoon, Dustin Hoffman, Pierce Brosnan, Morgan Freeman, Christian Slater, Jennifer Lopez, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hanks and Sharon Stone . And some of them are first timers.

“I don’t think Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony have been here before,” relates festival director Noah Cowan. “And we’re expecting some mayhem!”

He’s not only excited by the who but the what, explaining the movies are the real stars of this show. “Not only do our selections have a big impact on their end-of-the-year awards like the Oscars and Golden Globes, but increasingly their biggest directors and stars are coming here to Toronto.”

The Journals Of Knud Rasmussen, directed by Zacharias Kunuk and Norman Cohn, will open the festival on September 7 th. It closes September 16 th with Michael Apted’s Amazing Grace, starring Albert Finney.

There’ll be 352 films of all lengths and genres, from 52 countries. Canada is contributing 37 feature titles to the proceedings.

“We’re a festival located in Canada and the aggressive promotion of Canadian film is at the core of our mandate,” noted festival chief executive and director Piers Handling.

Among the notable world premieres just announced: Ridley Scott’s A Good Year, starring Crowe, and Ann Hui’s The Postmodern Life of My Aunt, starring Chow Yun-Fat. Fans will also get a chance to see Anthony Minghella’s Breaking and Entering, starring Law, Juliette Binoche and Robin Wright Penn.

And Ethan Hawke will be here promoting The Hottest State, which he wrote and directed. It’s based on a novel written by the actor.
