Baby Born At Side Of Highway

The slippery conditions made the highways a source of frustration for thousands of people this weekend, but one family experienced one of the happiest moments of their lives on Highway 407 near Woodbine.

Koren Bogle-Glenn and her husband Darrell Glenn were on their way to the hospital to deliver their son late Saturday when the baby decided he couldn’t wait any longer.

“You can plan all you want but at times you have no control over how things are going to turn out,” the mother said.

Dad may not have realized earlier in the day that he’d have such a hands-on experience in the birth of his child – he helped to deliver the baby at the side of the road with the help of an emergency dispatcher who coached him through the incredible process over the phone.

“She said, ‘I can’t hold it any longer,’ and then that’s when I called 9-1-1 and explained to dispatch that we were probably going to have to deliver the baby right now in the car,” the proud father explained.

“I didn’t want to do anything, or not do something that would harm the baby so I was really, really scared.”

O.P.P. Const. Angela Dias was the first person to arrive on the scene to help out.

“I was more concerned because (Koren) was very cold, it was freezing cold and it was starting to freezing rain and there were a lot of accidents on the highway so my concern was close the highway or close that lane so that nobody would hit the vehicle,” she explained.

“Everything ended up turning out good and they have a beautiful baby boy.”

The family is surprised by all the media attention over the birth and mom, dad and the kids say they’re looking forward to going home and getting a good night’s sleep.

“Anytime we’re passing by the intersection on the 407 and we can stop and say hey, this is the exact spot you were born,” Glenn said.

“That’s going to be a neat story to tell.”
