Second Suspect Arrested In Shooting Of Police Officer

A brazen shooting Saturday night sent a police officer to hospital and put two men in custody.

One of the two is accused of firing a shotgun at the uniformed man and it’s alleged that the projectile grazed his scalp.

The violence broke out around 7:30pm Saturday. An alleged attempted robbery at The Beer Store at Dupont and Symington led to a foot chase.

Then, police allege, one suspect opened fire.

The officer was rushed to St. Michael’s Hospital after a pellet from the gun struck him in the forehead. He was released a few hours later.

The alleged shooter was arrested at the scene.

Just before midnight, a second man was arrested on Gabian Way, five blocks north of where the botched robbery took place. The two now face a total of 26 charges.

Jeron Powell, 32, of Toronto, is charged with:

  • Five counts of Robbery While Armed with a Firearm
  • Two counts of Disguise with Intent
  • Conspiracy to Commit and Indictable Offence
  • Three counts of Attempted Murder While Using a Firearm
  • Two counts of Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  • Unauthorized Presence of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle
  • Possession of a Firearm Contrary to Prohibition Order
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime (under)
  • Possession of a Prohibited Firearm with Ammunition.

Craig Buckle, 29, of Toronto, is charged with:

  • Conspiracy to Commit Indictable Offence
  • Three counts of Robbery While Armed with a Firearm
  • Disguise with Intent
  • Possession of a Firearm with Ammunition
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  • Unauthorized Presence of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle
  • Possession of a Firearm Contrary to Prohibition Order.

Even with the arrests, people in the neighbourhood are on edge.

“I’m a pretty big guy…and we think of size as being sort of intimidating…but even us big guys feel scared,” revealed local Jack Fava.

But police insist they’re doing everything they can to make the streets safe.

“We are working diligently, through the Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy, at putting in place programs with enforcement prevention and education.” noted Supt. Glenn Decaire. “We’ve seen great strides in that program, and we’re going to continue that.”

The investigation is ongoing. If you can help, call police 416-808-1100 or CrimeStoppers to remain anonymous 416-222-TIPS (8477), or text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637).
