Second Storm Pounds Northern Philippines

Packing winds of 175 kilometres an hour, a second tropical storm roared through the northern Phlippines on Saturday.

Typhoon Parma came just a week after Tropical Storm Ketsana made landfall in the area, causng the country’s worst flooding in more than four decades.

“Whenever you have a second event immediately after such a significant first typhoon, that does cause further psychological issues,” explained John Saunders of Red Cross Disaster Management.

The streets of Manila were still under water and many residents remained stranded. At least 288 people have died.

Toronto’s Filipino-Canadian community is organizing a memorial Sunday night for the victims of the deadly storms. It will take place at Our Lady of the Assumption on Bathurst St. near Eglinton Ave. at 5pm.

“It is really heartbreaking, and sometimes I’m in tears when I see these people on television. One of the victims, she has to walk through the flood neck-deep. She saw dead bodies along the way and she was just shaking,” described Rosemar Enverga of the Filipino Catholic Mission.
