Two Conservative MPPs Hold Sit-In At Ontario Legislature

A Conservative MPP began a one-man sit-in at the Ontario Legislature shortly after 1pm on Monday.

Bill Murdoch is opposed to the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) and says his constituents in Bruce – Grey – Owen Sound are also against it.

Randy Hillier was one of several Conservative MPPs who formed a human shield around Murdoch, blocking any attempt to remove him. The Tories also pounded their desks and shouted, drowning out the debate.

The Speaker of the House has asked Murdoch to leave at least four times. So far, Murdoch has refused.

Speaker Steve Peter has suspended both Murdoch and Hillier until the end of the legislative session.

Murdoch called Premier Dalton McGuinty a liar, saying he broke a promise not to raise taxes.

Last week, opposition MPPs walked out during Question Period after McGuinty said the government would not be holding public hearings on the bill.

The HST would combine the provincial sales tax with the federal GST.
