Ontario Nurse Killed In Haiti Quake

An Ontario nurse is among the dead following an earthquake in Haiti.

Yvonne Martin, 67,  had just arrived in Port-au-Prince on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning, the Elmira native was confirmed dead.

She leaves behind her husband Ron (pictured below).

The Evangelical Church of Canada had sent seven people to the capital and the group had just settled into a guest house when the first tremors began.

The group was planning to provide medical care and support in several northern communities.

“We are deeply saddened by this loss, and wish to express our sincere sympathy to her family,” church president Phil Delsaut said in the statement.

“We also extend our sympathy to the families of other foreign relief workers injured or missing and to the people of Haiti affected by this disaster.”

Waterloo Mennonite Brethren Church Statement

Our Dear Sister, Yvonne
It is with a heavy heart that I share with you the death of our dear sister, Yvonne Martin.  Yvonne passed away as the result of the earthquake in Haiti, where she had just arrived to do medical mission work for the fourth time.

If you would like to pray or gather in love for Yvonne or for Haiti, the church will be open today, January 13, until 9 pm.

Please continue to pray for her family, especially her husband, Ron.  In unity with them, we are consoled to know that she died doing exactly what she loved to do.

Yvonne’s prayer for Haiti was Psalm 72.   As a church, we will make this our prayer too.
