Late Night Crash Sparks SIU Investigation

A family is grieving and Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in after a crash that killed a young woman and sent five others to hospital late Sunday night.

Sara Attayee, 26, was killed when her car was struck near Pharmacy and Lawrence avenues. The vehicle that hit her was being chased after police spotted suspects allegedly breaking into a Herbal Magic weight-loss store at Midland and Ellesmere.

The suspects took off and police pursued. The suspect’s car and another vehicle containing five women collided.

Three people had to be freed from the wreckage. Five people from the civilian car and one person from the car being followed were taken to hospital. One of the women remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries. There are reports the crash may have happened as the suspects tried to flee their vehicles and may have been traveling up to 140 kilometers per hour.

The alleged driver is in police custody.

The SIU has assigned four forensic investigators and six other investigators to look into the crash. They are a civilian agency called in to investigate any cases of serious injuries or death involving police.
