Family Able To Retrieve Precious Photos From Stolen Laptop

She thought they were gone forever, but thanks to a CityNews viewer, Teresa Solta was able to retrieve priceless photos of her daughter, who died at the age of 17 after a valiant battle with cancer.

Solta found her herself at the centre of a gripping drama after her laptop was stolen from a Toronto hospital while she was visiting her father, who is undergoing cancer treatment.

The Winnipeg family were shattered by the theft, and Toronto was disgusted with the callous crime.

It didn’t take police long to track down the alleged culprit, and the laptop, but when they finally loaded it up, they learned that the computer had been wiped.

Solta thought the photos of her daughter were permanently erased.

But CityNews viewer John Riddel, who manages Ontrack Data Recovery, offered to help her.  Engineers worked on her hard drive through the night and were able to recover most of the data.

It was an emotional moment when she learned the pics had been saved.

“(It means everything),” she said.  “It’s like a part of her.  I won’t be getting her back but it will be the next best thing.”

OnTrack was able to recover up to 80 percent of the pictures.

“I just felt I had to do something,” said Riddel.

The suspect wanted for the theft that outraged the city, Bradley Warford, appeared in court Friday and was remanded in custody.
