TDSB Votes To Close 8 Schools

In response to declining enrolment, the Toronto District School Board voted on Wednesday to close eight elementary schools starting next year.

Parents, community members and school administrators made the recommendations after meeting for the past few months over what do about dozens of half-full schools which also needed costly repairs. The TDSB also approved the committees’ proposal to convert 10 schools to junior kindergarten-to-Grade 8.

The schools that will close are Arlington Middle School, Brooks Road Public School, Heron Park Junior Public School, Kent Senior Public School, McCowan Road Junior Public School, Peter Secor Junior Public School, Pringdale Gardens Junior Public School and Silverthorn Junior Public School.

According to a report in the Toronto Star, the board’s schools have been losing about 4,000 students a year because of falling birth rates and people moving out of the city.

An official said the move will give the TDSB an added $19.8 million in capital, cut nearly $2 million in annual operating costs and save $59 million in repairs.

Six of 22 trustees opposed the closings, which will occur between 2011 and 2013.
