The B.C. coroner says an independent safety audit of the Whistler luge track is needed in the wake of the death of a Georgian athlete on the opening day of the 2010 Games.
The coroner found Olympic and luge federation authorities took all the precautions known to be necessary at the time of the Games.
But the coroner says it wasn’t good enough to prevent the horrifying death of the relatively inexperienced Nodar Kumaritashvili, so more scrutiny is needed.
As well, the coroner says the international luge federation should consider increasing the number of training runs in an effort to provide more comfort to those athletes who are less experienced than others.
The coroner concludes Kumaritashvili died instantly of multiple blunt-force injuries to the head and an inquest isn’t necessary because it wouldn’t provide any further information than was gathered for the report released today.
