5-year-old dies after being hit by a car in North York

A five-year-old girl has died after being hit by a car in North York.

Police tell CityNews that the child was struck at Yonge Street and Wedgewood Drive, north of Cummer Avenue, around 2:30 p.m. She later died at Sick Kids Hospital.

She and her mother were crossing the street at a stop sign when the 27-year-old driver of a silver Toyota Camry moved forward. The mother was thrown onto the car and the little girl was pinned underneath.

Emergency crews and bystanders worked frantically to free the girl.

“Witnesses…were responsible for taking the pressure off the suspension in the vehicle and pulling the child out,” Sgt. Tim Burrows said at the scene.

A police officer then drove the ambulance to hospital while paramedics tried to save the girl’s life.

It’s not known yet if any charges will be laid.

Toronto Police have shut down the intersection for the investigation, and TTC buses — including the 42 Cummer, 53 Steeles East, 60 Steeles West, and 97 Yonge — are diverting around the area.
