Construction begins on last stage of Mimico Waterfront Park

Crews broke ground Tuesday on the last phase of Etobicoke’s Mimico Waterfront Park, an $18.6 million project to revitalize Lake Ontario’s shoreline.

“A core strategy that we have is to really lead with public space as we’re doing here in Mimico,” Mark Wilson, chair of Waterfront Toronto, said at the park on Tuesday.

“Parks are a catalyst for redeveloping an area. They bring in new businesses, they bring in entrepreneurs, they bring in real estate development and they really create community.”

The park, which is expected to be completed in 2012, will be the western trailhead for a continuous waterfront trail across Toronto.

The project will add 1.1. kilometre of continuous waterfront park space between Norris Crescent Parkette and Humber Bay Park West.

Mimico Waterfront Park is a joint project involving Waterfront Toronto as well as the municipal, provincial and federal governments.
