CityPlace residents meet to combat ‘ghetto’ label

The residents of the CityPlace condo group gathered together Saturday evening, in response to criticism leveled at the development.

“It’s a little bit of a ghetto right now,” said David Fleming of Torontorealtyblog.com. “You have far too many tenants, tenants have no pride of ownership, and landlords don’t put any money into the property.”

CityPlace consists of 20 buildings, and is located right at Front Street and Spadina Avenue.

“It just seems like CityPlace wants to open up new condos. They don’t seem to care about the existing condos,” said resident David Das.

But not everyone is unhappy.

“My building is beautiful. I love my condo, I love the view out the window, and I love the accessibility to everything,” said resident Laura Brownell.

Much of the criticism stems from the lack of infrastructure in the area.

“There is no reason for non-residents to go to CityPlace. The things that draw you towards an area is the shops and restaurants,” said Fleming.

But the area’s councilor Adam Vaughan disagree.

“We have a new library, a new park and new schools, new roads, new pedestrian bridge and as there new components serve the community, we have to make sure they’re fine-tuned to make life better and easier for folks who live in this neighbourhood,” said Vaughan.
