Medical journal says patients shouldn't have to pay hospital parking

The Canadian Medical Association Journal says hospitals should stop charging patients for parking.

An editorial in the journal says parking charges are a health-care user fee in disguise.

The editorial, written by Dr. Rajendra Kale, notes that Wales and Scotland have abolished parking fees for patients.

Kale says patients sometimes end appointments before all the work is done because they are afraid their meter or pre-paid parking sticker is about to expire.

But Tom Closson, CEO of the Ontario Hospital Association, calls the idea absurd.

Closson, who has run several large hospitals, says parking fees help finance patient care.
