GO Transit fare increase approved

Go Transit riders face a fare hike of about five per cent next month.

Metrolinx, the provincial transportation agency that runs Go Transit, voted unanimously on Monday afternoon to increase one-ride fares using a “fare by distance” approach, meaning riders who travel farther will pay more as of Feb. 18.

The cost of a single adult fare will increase as follows:
-for existing fares between $4.20 and $5.50, the fare would increase by 30 cents.
-for fares between $5.51 and $7, it’d increase 35 cents.
-for fares over $7.01, it’d be 40 cents.

“A fare increase this year is necessary to ensure that GO Transit can continue to provide good customer service, expand services and manage increased costs in areas like fuel and hydro,” Metrolinx president and CEO Bruce McCuaig said in a release.

The fare hike, which will help meet increasing ridership demand, is expected to generate about $19.5 million a year.

Metrolinx said the loyalty discount program for PRESTO card users would remain unchanged. But management recommended reducing the discount rate on the paper monthly pass for adults and students to encourage customers to migrate to the PRESTO card.

The agency, which last increased fares in March 2010, met Monday afternoon to consider the fare increase.
