Truck driver charged after crash on Hwy. 403 in Hamilton

A truck driver was charged after his rig rolled over on Highway 403 in Hamilton on Wednesday morning, blocking lanes during the morning rush.

The tractor-trailer crashed around 1:30 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of the highway and spilled its load of steel.

The OPP closed the eastbound side of the 403 at the Lincoln Alexander Parkway. The left lane reopened around 8 a.m. and the right lane remained closed for several hours before it reopened around 1 p.m.

Crews managed to right the truck quickly, but cranes were brought in to clean up the rolls of steel on the road. Some diesel was also spilled in the crash.

The truck driver wasn’t hurt, but has been charged with careless driving.

There was heavy fog in the area but it’s not known if that caused the crash. Environment Canada issued a special weather statement early Wednesday warning of low visibility in Hamilton, Halton and Peel regions due to heavy fog, which is expected to burn off after sunrise.
