Ent & the City: Feb. 9-15, 2012

This city has something different to do every night. Here are some picks to help you navigate the social jungle that is Toronto.

Theatre
Saturday, Feb. 11
Potted Potter, The Unauthorized Harry Experience
The Panasonic Theatre. 651 Yonge St.
The Mirvishs are known for bringing big-budget theatre to Canada for decades and their loyalty to smaller productions have proven to be clever experiments in drawing a wider yet targeted audience to a night of theatre. Potted Potter is the clever re-telling of all seven Harry Potter books in 70 minutes. Whether you are looking for a comedic twist to the cultural phenomenon or you are simply looking for a laugh, this may be a show for you. The show is scheduled to run until at least the first week of March.
Cost: $25-$65

Theatre
Tuesday, Feb. 14
Les Coquettes
Revival Bar. 783 College St.
It’s basically an updated burlesque show, and is gaining a following, so you may want to check it out before it becomes too trendy. The website says “Les Coquettes and Revival are thrilled to present Speakeasy, a sizzling cabaret theatre where the entertainment is as sumptuous as the menu. Les Coquettes team with some of the hottest talent in the city, including executive chef Christopher Woods, to serve up a different show each night. Treat yourself to vintage decadence with a feast for all of the senses.”
Cost: $35-$85

Movies
Sunday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m.
Kabhie Kabhie
Bollywood Basement, 1035 Gerrard St. E.

The movie stars screen legends Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, Rakhi and Sashi Kapoor. Pure Nostalgia is the basis for this recommendation. On the surface the story is simply about two forbidden lovers who agree to stay away from each other but re-connect years later through a twist of fate. The movie defined a generation in the 70’s who was also part of a global migration for Indians. Hence the nostalgia.
Cost: $8

Music
Friday, Feb. 10 & Saturday, Feb. 11. 8 p.m.
City and Colour
Massey Hall, 178 Victoria St.
Not one but two shows for Toronto’s very own City and Colour. Though the group’s appeal varies from a normal rock demographic, the songwriting appeals to both lovers of rock music and alternative music. Expect to see a music hero type salute to these guys, who are Juno nominees this year, at Massey Hall and they do deserve it. One question though, do they drop the ‘u’ in Colour when they cross the border?
Cost: $85-$225
