E. coli recall now includes 135 products sold in supermarkets, restaurants

What started as a recall involving a handful of burger and steakette brands has now been expanded to include 135 beef products that could potentially be contaminated with E.coli that were sold in grocery stores and restaurants across the country.

President’s Choice, Best Value, Maple Lodge Farms, Country Morning Gold and Irresistibles are just a few of the brand names included in the recall. Products sold at the Keg and Weber’s restaurants are also affected.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says the products can be identified by the establishment number 761 printed on packages, cartons and cases.

The products involved in the recall can also be identified the following three ways:

  • Best Before date from BB 2012 JA 01 up to and including to BB 2013 FE 15
  • Bearing a production code with a format of 11 JL 01 up to and including 12 FE 15
  • Bearing a five-digit lot code where the last four digits are 1831 or greater

The CFIA issued its first warning about potentially-contaminated beef on Feb. 18, when it recalled Country Morning burgers and no name steakettes. The agency has since issued eight more warnings for products sold at various grocery stores across Ontario and Canada.

Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled but can cause serious and potentially fatal illness. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. The illness can also cause serious kidney problems.

There has been one case of illness associated with this recall.
