Wet snow, strong winds hit GTA Monday

Cold, wet and windy weather came along with the start of the work week, thanks to a slow-moving system from the United States.

An Environment Canada special weather statement for Toronto and the GTA warning of wet snow and high winds continued Monday. The statement covers most of southern Ontario, stretching from Niagara to Ottawa.

Rain, along with strong winds with gusts up to 70 km/h pounded Toronto, while residents in Orangeville dealt with as much as 20cm of snow.

“I didn’t miss winter, and I don’t like this. This is terrible,” said Orangeville resident Scott Smith.

While earlier forecasts had called for some snow, CityNews meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai said the system will present more of a rain and wind event as opposed to a wintry one. Ground temperatures are too warm, she said, for any snow accumulation in the GTA.

The temperature sat at 6 C before dawn, but cooler conditions moved in by early evening bringing it to about 3 C.

The cool and wet weather isn’t expected to let up until late Tuesday.

Not everyone is upset by the soggy conditions.

“We really needed the rain, it’s been very dry,” said one Torontonian.

The system is moving in from the U.S. Eastern Seaboard and has prompted winter storm watches and warnings in several regions south of the border, stretching from West Virginia to Western New York.

The U.S. National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Western New York, where snow accumulation anywhere up to five centimetres is expected on Monday.
