Measles warning for people who visited Credit Valley Hospital ER

Public health officials in Peel Region are warning people who were at Credit Valley Hospital’s emergency room last week that they may have been exposed to measles.

The warning applies to people who were in the Credit Valley ER at Eglinton Avenue and Credit Valley Road in Mississauga between 8:30 p.m. May 22 and 7:30 a.m. May 23. A person infected with contagious measles inadvertently exposed others to the illness, Peel Public Health said in a statement Wednesday.

Measles symptoms, which include cough, runny nose, fever, white spots in the mouth and red watery eyes sensitive to light, usually appear one to three weeks after exposure. Those symptoms are followed by a red rash.

The illness is spread through the air from coughing and sneezing and Peel Public Health says infected people are contagious from four days before to four days after a rash appears.

Measles usually results in about 10 days of illness and most people recover without treatment, but the illness is more severe in infants and adults than in children — it can also be very serious for pregnant women.

Health officials are urging anyone born in or after 1970 who haven’t received two doses of the measles vaccine and were at Credit Valley the night of May 22 or the morning of May 23 to watch for symptoms.

Peel Public Health is also urging anyone with symptoms to phone in the notify doctors about their condition before visiting a hospital or doctor’s office.
