Anderson Cooper admits he’s gay

Anderson Cooper put an end to widespread speculation on Monday by publicly acknowledging he’s gay.

The CNN anchor and talk show host came out in a letter posted online with his permission. The note was addressed to Andrew Sullivan, a writer for the Daily Beast, and published on the site.

In the letter, Cooper says he never raised the issue of his sexuality because he felt the stories he was covering should be in the public’s focus, and not his private life. Cooper published his memoir, Dispatches from the Edge, in 2006 and made no mention of his sexual orientation, because “it was a book focused on war, disasters, loss and survival. I didn’t set out to write about other aspects of my life,” he said in the letter.

“Recently, however, I’ve begun to consider whether the unintended outcomes of maintaining my privacy outweigh personal and professional principle,” Cooper writes.

“The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud,” he says later in the letter.
