21-month-old baby drowns in Lake Huron

A 21-month-old boy drowned in Lake Huron on Monday night.

Ontario Provincial Police say it happened around 8 p.m. off the shores of Manitoulin Island. The boy and his family are from the nearby Mindemoya community.

The entire family was at the beach for the day when the infant was found face down in the water, police say.

The family frantically tried to perform CPR before the child was rushed to a hospital on the island, where he was pronounced dead.

According to the OPP, 12 people have drowned in Ontario this month alone.
