Civic holiday weekend in Toronto: What’s open, closed & events

Welcome to summer’s second long weekend, as Ontario observes the civic holiday on Monday.

In Toronto, the day is also known as Simcoe Day, named in honour of John Graves Simcoe, who was instrumental in the creation of York, Upper Canada (which would eventually become the City of Toronto)

The holiday is also observed in most other provinces and territories, although it goes by different names and is often celebrated with different traditions: In Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island the day is known as as Natal Day, while it is Regatta Day in Newfoundland. Even in Ottawa the Civic Holiday goes by a different name, often referred to as Colonel By Day.

The civic holiday is not a statutory holiday under Ontario’s Retail Business Holidays Act so stores that may normally be closed liquor, beer and grocery can open, provided local municipalities do not object.
