Toronto jail guards protesting firing of colleagues Thursday

Correctional officers at the Toronto West Detention Centre are holding a three-hour picket on Thursday to protest the “unjust” dismissal of three colleagues and to highlight problems with overcrowding and under-staffing at the facility in Rexdale.

The protest starts at 10 a.m. outside the jail on Disco Road. The correctional officers are holding the information picket after three colleagues were fired unjustly, according to the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU).

The union claims the firings are diverting attention away from larger issues, including overcrowding, insufficient staff levels and violence against guards.

OPSEU Local 517 is concerned about violence similar to an incident late last month at the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre in London where tactical squads were called in after inmates flooded toilets, lit fires and bent iron doors.
