Caledon teen charged in fatal wrong-way crash on QEW

Police have formally charged a Caledon teen alleged to have caused a fatal head-on crash on the QEW last month.

Sabastian Prosa, 19, appeared in an Old City Hall court Friday morning accused of impaired driving, dangerous driving, criminal negligence and having a blood-alcohol level of more than 80 milligrams.

He was allegedly driving the wrong way on the ramp from the eastbound QEW to the northbound Highway 427 and ran into a minivan on Aug. 5.

Jayantha Wijeratne, 49, and his 16-year-old daughter Eleesha were killed instantly. Wijeratne’s wife Antonette survived the crash, but has serious injuries and needs rehab.

Prosa — who turned up on crutches and also needs ongoing treatment for his injuries — hung his head and wept when the Crown read the details of the crash in court.

He was released on $100,000 bail and placed under house arrest, with his father Giuseppe Prosa and stepmother as sureties. He is not allowed to drink or take drugs and can only leave his home for medical appointments and court appearances.

He is due in court again on Oct. 25.
