Hundreds protest outside Marineland

A group of protesters holding signs that say ‘Everyone Loathes Marineland’, stood outside the popular Niagara attraction on Sunday.

The event was organized by the Marineland Animal Defense and the Niagara Animal Defense.

The protest took place on the park’s final day of the season and activists say they hope the doors do not reopen.

“People don’t love captivity, people don’t love profiting off of animal abuse.” Zach Ruiter animal rights advocate told CityNews.

The group hope to end the reported animal cruelty and captivity at Marineland.

Niagara police say by around 1:30 p.m. the group had grown in size to approximately 800 people.

A few members of the group rushed the front gates of Marineland into the park near the show area. Police say they were able to quickly get the situation under control and the crowd was disbursed off of the private property.

No injuries or property damage were reported.

Advocate Carlos Garcia told CityNews he hopes their message goes beyond just what is allegedly happening at Marineland.

“I would hope we can raise awareness about animal rights in Toronto and particularly the lives of marine mammals.” he said.

The group has protested outside the park throughout the summer.
