York police take part in International Walk To School Day

The traffic tie-ups outside schools right before and after classes may have been lighter Wednesday morning thanks to an international event meant to promote an active and healthy lifestyle for kids.

Wednesday is International Walk to School Day, which aims to encourage physical activity, ease traffic congestion, and reduce pollution near schools.

York Regional Police officers were out helping students from four elementary schools in Thornhill and Richmond Hill, known for high traffic congestion, make their way to school safely Wednesday morning.

Officers are also encouraging kids to refrain from using devices, like iPods and cellphones, that could distract them during the walk to and from school.
