Apple unveils new iPad mini

The biggest news in the tech world came in a small package when Apple introduced the new iPad mini in San Jose, Calif., on Tuesday.

The fourth generation tablet comes equipped with a 7.9-inch multi-touch display, FaceTime HD and iSight cameras, ultrafast wireless performance and 10 hours of battery life.

It’s 23 per cent thinner, and at just 0.68 pounds its 53 per cent lighter than its predecessor.

Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, assured consumers that the “pencil thin” tablet can still pack a heavyweight punch.

It can run more than 275,000 apps and features a 5-megapixel camera that can record full 1080p HD video.

“We wanted it to be smaller, so it could be thinner and lighter, but not so small that it stops being incredibly usable,” Schiller said at the unveiling.

“This just isn’t a shrunken down iPad. It’s an entirely new design,” he added.

The iPad mini will be available on Nov. 2. The 16GB model will go for $329 Cdn; $429, for the 32GB model; $529, for the 64GB model.

Apple also unveiled a new 13-inch MacBook Pro laptop with retina display that is thinner and lighter than the current model and a new iMac with reduced reflection, and faster processors.
