Ex-marital affairs exposed by January credit card bills

January is the most common month for exposing affairs as once-discreet credit card purchases are revealed in monthly statements, according to a marriage survey out of the United Kingdom.

MaritalAffair.co.uk, a site for married people who want to date, found that more than half of their male members admitted to getting caught, or nearly getting caught, over an affair at the beginning of January.

The website found that nearly 90 per cent of those cases caught were tripped up by what they called “present buying oversights.”

Affairs were revealed in December credit card statements (the No. 1 cause), receipts from cash purchases (No. 2) and branded shopping bags discovered in a January clean (No. 3).

According to the research, men on MaritalAffair.co.uk spent an average of £170 (about C$270) on a gift for their lover compared to an average £90 ($143) on their wives or partner. Female members of the site reported a measly average £18 ($29)spend on their other lover.

The top gift for a mistress was an item of jewelry, followed by perfume, lingerie and a weekend getaway.

And, in perhaps unsurprising news, the second week of January is the most common week for U.K. women to file for divorce.
