Les Miserables returning to Toronto: Mirvish

Les Misérables will be returning to Toronto, theatre mogul David Mirvish confirmed.

Mirvish told Breakfast Television that producer Cameron Mackintosh was working on a “new version” of the musical, similar to the movie version.

Mackintosh was also behind the 25th anniversary tour of Les Misérables that launched in London in 2010.

While Mirvish could not provide a date for the hit show’s return, the Toronto Star reported that the musical would open the 2013-2014 season in September.

That makes it seven years since Les Miz was last seen by Toronto fans.

Les Misérables opened in Toronto in 1989 and ran until 1990, when the cast began a national tour. The musical returned in 1991, 1992, 1998 and 2005.

The movie, also produced by Mackintosh, is sweeping the box office, earning $US 120 million since its Dec. 25, 2012 release, and is picking up steam on the awards-show circuit.

Les Misérables won the Golden Globe for best musical or comedy film on Sunday, while Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman each won acting awards.

It was named the movie of the year by the American Film Institute and is up for eight Oscars.
