‘Identity Thief’ takes top spot at weekend box office

Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy had the star power to draw audiences to her latest film Identity Thief, which took the top spot at the box office this weekend.
The film pulled in US$36.5 million at the North American box office, beating out the zombie comedic romance Warm Bodies and Steven Soderbergh’s thriller Side Effects, according to boxofficemojo.com.
Despite lacklustre reviews, the McCarthy-Jason Bateman team pulled people to the theatres. McCarthy stars as a fraudster who steals Bateman’s identity, forcing him on a road trip to track her down and clear his name.
