Approaching storm could make for messy Wednesday morning commute

GTA residents may want to set aside some extra time for the commute to work on Wednesday morning with a significant storm set to hit the region on Tuesday night.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement warning of a potential winter storm on track to hit the GTA.

“Significant amounts of precipitation are possible with this system,” Environment Canada said. “At this point, there is a great deal of uncertainty regarding which areas will see mostly rain or snow as temperatures will be fairly close to the freezing mark.”

CityNews meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai said the amount of precipitation will depend on the temperature. She’s forecasting rain mixed with wet snow to start falling in the GTA after 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The precipitation is forecast to turn to heavy, wet and accumulating snow overnight and into Wednesday morning, making for a potentially messy and slow commute. Ramsahai is forecasting about 10 centimetres of snow.

In preparation for the incoming weather Air Canada has issued a travel alert for Wednesday and Thursday.

A major storm hit Toronto and the GTA on Feb. 7 and 8, dumping about 25 centimetres of snow.
