Man, 72, faces murder charge in Scarborough senior home death

A 72-year-old man faces second-degree murder after a woman was killed at a Scarborough seniors’ home on Wednesday night, Toronto police say.

Emergency crews were called to The Wexford Residence on Lawrence Avenue just east of Pharmacy Avenue around 11:15 p.m.

Joycelyn Dickson, 72, was pronounced dead at the scene. Both Dickson and the accused were residents at the home, but they did not live together, police said.

The accused allegedly assault a second woman, a 91-year-old woman who was taken to hospital. The extent of her injuries is not yet known.

Seniors’ homes “are safe havens. It’s unfortunate that we do have the odd incident,” Det. Sgt. Wayne Banks said outside The Wexford.

“By no means is this a reflection on this nursing home or any other nursing home.”

Police said a weapon was recovered, but would not say what it was.

Peter Roy Brooks was arrested at the scene. He was also charged with aggravated assault.

He was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday afternoon.
