GTA gets 2 new area codes starting Monday

As the GTA continues to grow, the need for new unique phone numbers has forced the Telecommunications Alliance to add new area codes.
Starting Monday, telecommunications companies can begin handing out the 437 area code in Toronto alongside 416 and 647 and the 365 area code in the 905-289 region.
“These new area codes reflect the growing use of cell phones and other mobile devices,” Canadian Numbering Administrator director Glenn Pilley said in a statement.
Over the next few months the remaining numbers in the current area codes will still be assigned until there are no more available.
“We expect the first numbers with the new area codes to be assigned over the coming months as part of a seamless transition process,” said Pilley.
Adding an area code can create more than seven million new phone numbers.
