Alleged carjacking victims held up at gunpoint, court hears

Several witnesses took the stand at the trial of an alleged serial carjacker on Wednesday to describe being held up at gunpoint more than two years ago.

Osamwonyi Enotie, 31, is on trial for dozens of charges stemming from a five alleged incidents in 2010 and has pleaded not guilty.

Wilson Fernandes told the court as he pulled into his Etobicoke driveway on the evening of Nov. 4, 2010, he saw two men approach and thought it was the police wanting to talk to him about not stopping properly at a sign.

The taller of the two men ordered Fernandes to give him the keys to his new Toyota, and when Fernandes refused, the shorter man cocked a gun and held it to Fernandes’s head, the court heard.

Fernandes said one man drove away in the Toyota, the other in a van.

Fernandes’ wife Julie took the stand next and said as she was walking toward her husband and the two men, he told her not to come and sounded afraid. She ran for help.

The next witness, Edward Patros, testified about a similar experience two days later.

Patros said he was visiting family in Brampton and as they piled into their Toyota SUV to leave the house, two men opened the doors and one said, “I wanna kill you. I want the car.”

Patros said, with a gun in his side, he told the men to take the car and whatever else they wanted.

The men allegedly took two phones and drove off after Patros activated the car’s ignition with his smart key.

The Crown also read evidence from a witness who had left the country. James Wang alleged a man approached him and his wife as they pulled into their driveway on Nov. 6, 2010, pointed a gun at them and said, “Give me the [expletive] keys.”

His wife gave another man her BlackBerry and the two suspects allegedly drove off in Wang’s Honda Pilot and another vehicle.

On the first day of the trial on Tuesday, two women told the court about similar hold-ups within days of the ones described on Wednesday.

The Crown plans to call officers to the stand on Thursday to give insight into the operation.
