2 shot during west-end bank robbery

Police are on the hunt for two suspects after a brazen daylight bank robbery in the city’s west-end, which ended with two people to hospital with gunshot wounds.

It happened at a TD Canada Trust bank on St. Clair Avenue West, east of Jane Street, just after noon.

Police say a 22-year-old female bank teller suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh inside the bank. A man in his 50s, who was a customer inside the bank at the time, was shot in the stomach outside.

“That customer chased the suspects into the parking lot where a further struggle ensued,” Staff Insp. Mike Earl told CityNews. “At which time, the male with the handgun discharged his handgun more than once, we believe, at the customer. That customer was struck in the abdomen.”

Both victims were taken to hospital in serious condition.

Police said the alleged robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Both suspects are described as black, with dark complexions, in their early 20s and may have been wearing hooded sweatshirts.

One suspect was armed with a rifle, the other was armed with a semi-automatic handgun. Police say these men should not be approached and are considered armed and dangerous.

Witnesses say two men fled in a green Honda, reportedly stolen, with the licence AKAC786. The vehicle was located by police in the Jane Street and Wilson Avenue area around 8 p.m.

The suspects remain at large.

Meanwhile, authorities in Peel are investigating a robbery at the Bank of Montreal at Dundas Street East and Tomken Road.

They say two suspects, who were wearing dark clothes, are at large. One is described as male, five-foot-five and skinny. The other suspect’s face was covered.

Currently, officers are treating the two robberies as unrelated.
