Police issue 11 stunt driving charges in one weekend

The number of drivers caught stunt driving is soaring this spring, Toronto police say.
From April 19 to April 22, police arrested 11 people for speed-related stunt driving. In 2012, only five charges were issued in the same period.
Two examples from this past weekend include a Porsche driver driving 181 kilometres per hour and a BMW driver going 185 kilometres an hour on the Gardiner Expressway. Both had consumed alcohol.
What do these drivers face?
“An immediate seven-day licence suspension, an immediate seven-day vehicle impoundment, a loss of six demerit points, a fine upon convicition between $2,000 and $10,000. A possible suspension of their driver’s licence and a possible term of imprisonment,” acting superintendent Gord Jones explained.
Jones adds their auto insurance rates will likely go up as well.
During the same period, 45 stunt-driving related charges, including Toronto’s 11, were issued in Ontario.
Some of the incidents involved speeds 85 kilometres per hour over the posted limit.
Not only did the incidents happen on highways, they also happened on city streets.
Last year, Toronto police laid 381 stunt-driving charges. So far this year, the police have laid 93 stunt-driving charges.
On the weekend of April 12-14, only three charges were issued in Toronto.
