Ford says Bixi bike program should be ‘dissolved’

Mayor Rob Ford says the troubled Bixi bike-share program should be “dissolved” as city council gears up to discuss its fate Tuesday.

Ford says the city should get rid of the whole program because it is losing money.

“It should just be dissolved. It’s not working. The program’s been a failure,” he said.

City staff are recommending the city take over the program and TTC Chair Karen Stintz may suggest putting it under the TTC’s watch.

Ford does not think that is a good idea either, saying it would not solve the money problem, just move it to another jurisdiction.

Of the over $4-million loan city hall gave Bixi, it has only paid back about a quarter of it.

Bixi, founded in Montreal in 2008, has bike-sharing programs in citiies around the world, including Boston, London, Melbourne and Washington, D.C.
