Beloved GTA drive-in theatre closing

A cherished drive-in theatre in Sharon, north of Newmarket, won’t be opening its doors this summer as it has for nearly 60 years, upsetting many locals who made watching movies under the stars a family tradition.

The owners of the North York Drive In Theatre on Mount Albert Road stated on their Facebook page Tuesday that “regrettably the drive-in will not be open this summer” after 58 years.

“Unfortunately due to development and changes to digital film we are unable to continue the tradition this year. It is with much regret that we say goodbye to summer evenings at North York,” the Murrell family said. “Technology and conversion to digital projection has made us obsolete and threatens many other independent theatres.”

The owners couldn’t be reached immediately for comment, but more than 1,000 people took to the social networking site, lamenting of their loss.

Michelle Lynn posted on Facebook, “this is soo very sad i have sooo many fond memories of the drive in from when i was little with my parents to a teen with my friends and now as im older with my partner. so sad that the tradition will not carry on.”

Mark Reda and his wife have been going to the drive-in since they were dating in the mid-2000s and hopes the theatre can be saved. He phoned the owners but was unable to reach anyone. He thinks the theatre should continue by playing old classics like The Godfather.

“I’d pay full admission [for] that,” he said.
