Police investigate hate letter targeting teen with autism

Police in Durham Region are investigating after a hate letter directed at a teenage boy with autism was delivered to his grandmother’s house.

Karla Begley told CityNews her son Max, 13, stays with his grandmother in the morning during the summer time. It was at that home in Newcastle where letter was delivered on Friday.

“I was shaking when I was reading it,” Brenda Millson, Max’s grandmother, told CityNews. “It’s awful words. You don’t know why somebody would ever do such a thing.”

The typed, one-page letter refers to the young boy as a “nuisance” and a “wild animal” before suggesting the family move or “euthanize” the child.

Durham police say the note has been forwarded to the office of the Crown Attorney.

“Obviously it’s a concern for anyone who would read it,” police spokesperson Dave Selby told CityNews. “For us though it takes that next level in terms of determining whether there’s an offence in here.”

Neighbours say they hope the identity of the person who wrote the hate letter comes to light.
