OPP’s “Operation Impact” a success

The results are in from the OPP’s Thanksgiving long weekend campaign that saw officers cracking down on the big four: impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving and not using a seat belt.
OPP Sergeant Dave Woodford says it looks like motorists are getting the message about the importance of road safety.
During “Operation Impact,” OPP issued over 4,500 speeding tickets, whereas 9,000 tickets were handed out during last year’s Thanksgiving weekend.
“You look at seat belt charges, 987 last year and this year 634; the same for distracted driving, last year 278 and this year 204; and impaired, in over 80, last year 86 and this year 79,” explained Woodford.
Other charges included over 200 distracted driving charges and about 80 impaired driving charges.
“Maybe people are starting to get the message and the same goes for seat belts, drinking and driving offenses, as well as distracted driving offenses, the number of charges are down this year,” said Woodford. “So I like to look at it as that it’s a success.”
The OPP say two people died on the roads and one off-road.
The two road fatalities involved a 21-year-old month child and his 7-year-old brother, both of whom were killed after being struck by a vehicle in Parry Sound on Friday.
Last year, eight people died during the long weekend.
