Toronto police identify victim in fatal baseball bat attack

Toronto police have identified a man who died of injuries sustained when he was beaten with a baseball bat last month.

Danny La, 22, and a second man were attacked by a group of men outside a restaurant in the Spadina Avenue and Baldwin Street area during the early hours of Sept. 30.

La was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition. He died of his injuries on Sunday, police say.

A post-mortem examination found La died as a result of multiple blunt-force injury to the head.

The second man remains in hospital.

“This is not just a group of young men having fisticuffs. This is a vicious, vicious assault,” said Det.-Sgt. Pauline Grey. “The level of viciousness, the level of violence is quite shocking.”

Police said La and four men were at the Uniun Nightclub on Sept. 29 when an altercation occurred outside the Adelaide Street nightclub.

However, police are unsure of La’s involvement in the altercation.

Police believe the suspects may have also received injuries during the assault.

The suspects are described as Asian and between the ages of 21 and 25.

La is the city’s 49th homicide victim of the year.
