City’s official Christmas tree arrives at Nathan Phillips Square

The city’s official Christmas tree was erected at Nathan Phillips Square on Sunday.

The 19-metre white spruce was installed ahead of the 47th annual Cavalcade of Lights which occurs at the end of the month.

It came from an abandoned farm near Bancroft. Cranes and eight cables were used to get the tree, which weighs at least four tonnes, in place.

Neil Weller of Weller Tree Service has had the responsibility of picking the tree for the last 47 years.

“It takes a lot of work,” he said.

The Cavalcade of Lights launches the holiday season on Nov. 30 with an estimated 40,000 people in attendance.

The event includes the lighting of the Toronto tree, live performances by up-and-coming recording artists and international favourites followed by fireworks, a concert and a skating party.
