Kadri ejected after hit on Wild’s Granlund

Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri was ejected for his hit on Mikael Granlund during Toronto’s 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild Wednesday night.

Kadri was assessed a five-minute match penalty on the play for a hit to the head.

Granlund appeared shaken up after the hit but remained in the game.

After the contest, Leafs coach Randy Carlyle did not appear to agree with the call on Kadri.

The hit on Granlund was not the only incident for Kadri Wednesday as the Leafs sniper knocked Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom out of the game seven minutes into the first period.

Kadri’s elbow appeared to hit Backstrom in the head during a collision in front of the net, causing the Wild goalie to lay flat on the ice for about 30 seconds before slowly sitting up.

Backstrom stayed in the game until a timeout with 10:31 left in the period before skating to the bench and heading to the dressing room. He had three saves.

He was replaced by backup goaltender Josh Harding, who was originally scheduled to have the night off because of an illness.
