Stolen church statue near Kensington Market returned

A statue, which was stolen from a church near Kensington Market on the weekend, has been returned.

The bronze-coloured Jesus the Panhandler statue went missing from the northwest corner the Church of Saint Stephen-in-the-Fields in the area of College and Bathurst streets on Saturday afternoon.

Toronto police weren’t immediately available for comment but Rev. Maggie Helwig told CityNews on Thursday, “We found it on the back steps this morning with a little note which had been badly damaged (from the rain).”

It appears to say, “I’m sorry. It seemed like a good idea at the time.”

“We’re very, very happy that it’s back,” she said, adding people are walking by the church and patting its head again.

The statue was loaned to the church by artist Timothy Schmalz.
