Diane von Furstenberg celebrates 40 years of the wrap dress

Fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg hosted an opening night exhibition, which features her iconic wrap dress, in Los Angeles on Friday.

“This is the first time that I ever honored the wrap dress, and she did so much for me. She made me famous; she paid for all my bills, so tonight we celebrate the wrap dress.”

The Journey of a Dress Exhibition celebrates the 40th anniversary of the wrap, and includes vintage and modern creations from von Furstenberg and other designers.

“I don’t look so good in a wrap dress anymore,” the 67-year-old joked. “But anyway, I fake it and I did the best I can.”

Von Furstenberg let loose a fashion tidal wave with her wrap dress in 1972 – one design suitable for women of all ages and sizes.

“I like the wrap dress, it’s very nice, it’s flattering,” said Golden Globe nominee Julie Delpy. “I have one good thing about my body, the only thing is that I have a good waist, it’s perfect for those wrap dresses, a small waist.”

Von Furstenberg is still going strong, having released a spring 2014 line last September.
